How do I Become a Life Coach?
There are a lot of misconceptions about the coaching profession. One of the most common is that you have to be certified to become a life coach. While a certification or any additional education from a reputable institution never hurts, it’s not required in most jurisdictions.
For the most part, you only need experience, proficiency, and the ability to teach other people how to accomplish a goal. There is no board of body that can tell you whether or not you can coach, but to do the job well you have to be able to help someone get from point A to point B.
There are certifications that you can obtain, but it’s not required. So if you’ve been wondering how you can become a life coach, keep reading. You may be surprised at how attainable your goal actually is.
What is a Life Coach?
Before we move on, let’s be sure we’re on the same page, because there’s often confusion about what a coach actually does.
According to Merriam-Webster, a coach is a private tutor or one who instructs or trains. So just like a football coach or first base coach, a life coach can help you succeed, but does not and cannot do the work for their client. A coach wants their clients to succeed and will offer tools to help, but ultimately it’s up to the client to do the heavy lifting.
There are some coaches who would disagree and only offer suggestions that allow the client to figure out ways to solve the problem more independently. If you become a coach, or are one, you’ll have to determine for yourself, how much assistance you want to provide.
As a business coach myself, I prefer to offer the least amount of assistance necessary. Meaning, I stop short of trying to do the work for clients. It’s not always easy but there are ways of helping without taking over. We tend to learn more when we have to go through certan processes on our own, so I like to point out a possible solution in a way that will enourage a client to be able to solve similar future issues on their own.
With life coaching this is particularly important. Too much interference into a client’s life can be disastrous so it’s imporant to point out options, pros, and cons, while letting them make final decisions on their own.
How Much Does a Life Coach Make?
There are no set rates so life coaches set their own rates. According to Zip Recruiter, the average life coach earns between $30 and $130 per hour. I personally believe that’s low, but it may only take into account life coaches who are employed by someone else.
As a self-employed life coach you can charge whatever you believe someone will pay for your experience or expertise. You must also take into account the type of coaching you offer. If you’re a life coach helping people quit smoking, the perceived value of that may allow for a higher rate than a life coach who teaches kids how to jump rope.
Look at the prevailing rates for your service and the salary you’d like to earn. Calculate the number of clients you’d need to earn that salary and go from there. Of course, you also have to factor in expenses to make sure your revenue can pay your bills.
